With all the news of forclosures, short sales, and people that are upside down with their mortages, the thought of useing home equity has taken a back burner today.  The news today is bleak for many people who bought at the height of the recent Real Estate Bubble.  The next and hopefully the last large group of Robo-Signing Foreclosures is about to decend upon us.  That means a glut in some areas of the country, and declines of equity across the board.

To let some sunshine into the picture, equity is only on paper.  Many of the Boomers are getting ready to retire, and they have homes that are paid for or nearly so.  So it is worth less, however it is still worth a great deal.  We are close to the bottom in pricing now.  Interest rates are the lowest in history.  If you are staying in your current home in retirement or the foreseeable future, there is an opportunity now.  Borrow some of that equity http://www.aviva.co.uk/equity-release/ at the lowest rates in your lifetime, to make that asset at least partically liquid.  Equity that cannot be reached when needed is worthless.   The upside is that when prices bottom out they start an upward trend, rebuilding your equity.  All clouds have a lineing of some sort.
